William Paul's research has concentrated in recent years on two principal themes. First, the effect of high hydrostatic pressures up to about 50 kilobars, developed in diamond anvil cells, on the photoluminescence of various types of semiconductor quantum well. From these measurements, information regarding the component semiconductors and also properties produced by the well structure may be inferred.Second, the preparation (by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition), characterization and property measurement of amorphous hydrogenated silicon, germanium and Si-Ge alloy films for application in solar cell and display devices. Both of these lines of research have involved many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in-house, as well as collaborative efforts across the country and abroad.
Most recently, his has been working on the luminescence from oxidized a-Ge:H, the photoluminescence of Si nanocrystals in SiO2 , and room temperature 1.54 micron luminescence of erbium in silicon.
