Winners of 2023 Student Prizes

On May 1, 2023, the department celebrated the achievements of our undergraduate and graduate students with awards presentation:

Jack T. Sanderson Memorial Prize in Physics
for graduating seniors with the highest GPA among concentration courses

  • Avery Parr

Carol Davis Prize
Awarded to a Physics concentrator in recognition of their efforts to build a more inclusive and welcoming environment in the Physics Department.

  • Ilona Demler: for her work with Undergraduate Women in Physics (WiP) to encourage women and underrepresented students to explore Physics

David J. Robbins prize
The prize, established as an endowment in 1956 by the Robbins family in memory of their son, David J. Robbins, A.B. ’55, honors graduate students who enrich graduate student life and promote an inclusive environment.

  • Rodrigo Araiza Bravo: In recognition of his outreach work and recruitment efforts at the annual Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science Conferences since 2020
  • Noah Toyonaga: In recognition of his efforts to bring a peer-led bystander and Title IX training "Respect is Part of Research" to Harvard as part of the G1 Orientation in 2020 and 2021
  • Justina Yang: In recognition of her work on the Physics Department's Equity and Inclusion Committee and the APS Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance

White Prize
Awarded annually to Teaching Fellows who have demonstrated excellence in teaching introductory courses in Physics.

Merit Fellowship Winners

Each year, the department chooses an outstanding experimentalist and theorist for nomination for a Merit Fellowship. The nominees must have passed their qualifying exams and have an approved dissertation prospectus. The winners of the Merit Fellowship are chosen by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences from among all nominations from all departments, and the award allows students to focus their time on research and or writing. This year two Physics students were awarded a Merit Fellowship.

Gertrude and Maurice Goldhaber Prize
Awarded annually to the outstanding theoretical and experimental graduate students who have passed their qualifying oral examinations in the preceding year.
