The Instructional Physics/SEAS Machine Shop, located in the basement of Lyman Lab, is set up to be primarily a teaching shop for the Physics Department and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. We have a state-of-the-art facility, complete with computerized machine tools and full arc welding capabilities.
In order to use the shop, all users are required to obtain access via a tiered Certification system currently offering two levels of certification: RED and GREEN. RED is the basic course which allows casual users access to specific machine tools not requiring extensive training. GREEN is a longer, in-depth, one-on-one training course.
RED course is offered on the first Thursday of each month, typically in two sessions: 9:00am and 1:00pm. You only need to attend one session. To sign up, please fill out the Shop Class Sign Up form, save it on your computer, then email it to email@example.com. The arrangements for the GREEN training can be made upon complition of the RED certification.
To better understand our tiered access system, please consult the Training and Certification page.
Because we take safety very seriously, we have set many policies for those who use our shop. After the normal workday, only Authorized Shop Users* may operate the equipment in the shop. All users must follow our After Hours Usage Policies at all times or lose all access to the Machine Shop. A PEL (Physics, EPS, LISE) Safety Committee oversees all aspects of safety within those departments. For safety questions and concerns, please contact Tiffany Lee (firstname.lastname@example.org).
For radiation training, please see the information on the Harvard Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) website; see also The EH&S Frequently Asked Questions.
