The Instructional Physics/SEAS Machine Shop, located in the basement of Lyman Lab, is set up to be primarily a teaching shop for the Physics Department.  We have a state-of-the-art facility, complete with computerized machine tools and full arc welding capabilities.

Basic training is required for all shop users. To sign up, please fill out the Shop Class Sign Up form, save it on your computer, then email it to Alejandro Lopez. Alejandro will then contact you to schedule the training session. A prerequisite for using the shop is successful completion of the Makerspace / Machine shop safety training found in the training portal, please show / send Alejandro a copy of your completion certificate.

To better understand our tiered access system, please consult the Training Guidelines page.

Because we take safety very seriously, we have set many policies for those who use our shop. After the normal workday, only Authorized Shop Users  may operate the equipment in the shop. All users must follow our After Hours Machine Use Policy all times or lose all access to the Machine Shop. A PEL (Physics, EPS, LISE) Safety Committee oversees all aspects of safety within those departments. For safety questions and concerns, please contact Tiffany Lee (tiffany_lee@harvard.edu).

For radiation training, please see the information on the Harvard Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) website.
