Caelan Brooks Receives the 2021 LeRoy Apker Award

October 15, 2021

Congratulations to G1 Caelan Brooks, the 2021 recipient of the APS LeRoy Apker Award "for the discovery of distinct dynamical regimes for coherent ultracold atoms confined in a ring-shaped lattice potential; and for developing a statistical model that depicts the formation of phenotypic patterns associated with bacterial biofilm growth."

Caelan graduated summa cum laude from Kutztown University in 2021 with a B.S. in Physics and minors in Mathematics and Spanish. She worked with Prof. Kunal K. Das on ultra-cold atoms trapped in ring-shaped lattices, demonstrating the...

Steven Weinberg – A Reminiscence

August 23, 2021

by Howard Georgi

Theoretical physics lost one of its most brilliant, thoughtful, influential and durable practitioners when Steven Weinberg died in July at the age of 88.  Steve came to MIT in 1969 after ten very productive years at Berkeley that established him as one of the world’s leading quantum field theorists.  He joined the Harvard faculty in 1973 as the Higgins Professor of Physics, taking over the chair held by Julian Schwinger and Percy Bridgeman before him. Legend has it that when Steve moved into Schwinger’s elegant wood-paneled office on...

Prof. Argüelles-Delgado Receives a 2021 IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Astroparticle Physics.

July 12, 2021

IceCube collaborator and Harvard physics professor Carlos A. Argüelles-Delgado is the recipient of a 2021 IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Astroparticle Physics.

Young Scientist Prizes recognize the contributions of early career physicists within the subfields of each commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). The accolade consists of a certificate, medal, and a monetary award, which are usually presented biannually at the...
