My interests are in the management of basic and applied research in physical sciences and innovation of high technology, including design and development of components, subsystems and systems for communications networks and national security. I am also interested in science, engineering and innovation policy. My own research interests over the years have been in basic and applied experimental condensed matter physics in a number of cross-disciplinary fields including optical phenomena at surfaces and in semiconductors, complex fluids, disordered systems and systems of lower spatial dimensions, clusters and nanostructures, nanotechnology, nonequilibrium phenomena and phase transitions. I am currently just getting up to speed as Dean of Engineering and Applied Sciences and so am not taking any graduate students at present.
